How to save a recipe from Pinterest

Paste a pin's link into Panwich. A recipe pin is a signpost to a recipe on another site, so Panwich follows the pin to that page and reads the recipe there: the ingredients, the steps, the times and the photo.

What you need

  • 1pin that links to a recipeThe recipe itself lives on the page the pin was saved from.
  • 1Panwich accountA name, an email and a password. Free while Panwich is in its early days.
  • 1phone or computerPanwich opens in a browser. There is nothing to install.

Method

  1. Copy the pin's link

Open the pin, tap Share and choose Copy link. A short pin.it link works too.

  2. Paste it into Panwich

In Panwich, press + and choose Paste a link. Paste the link and press Import recipe. If you saved that post before, Panwich says so and offers to open the one you have.

  3. Look it over and save

Panwich opens what it read in its editor before anything is kept. Change a name, fix an amount, add a step, then save it.

  4. Cook from it

Change the servings and every amount follows. Add to list puts the ingredients on your shopping list, and Cook step by step shows one step at a time with the timers it found in the method.

What it reads, and what it cannot

Panwich takes

  • The recipe on the page the pin points at: ingredients, steps, servings and times.
  • That page's photo, copied into your Panwich so it stays.
  • A link back, kept with the recipe.

It cannot read

  • A pin that is only a picture, with no link to a recipe behind it.
  • A pin whose link is dead, or leads to a home page and not to a recipe.
  • A video pin with the recipe only in the video.

If it does not work

The pin has no link
If the recipe is written in the pin's description, take a screenshot of it and choose From a screenshot or photo. Otherwise type it in with Write one out.
The recipe site refuses
A few large recipe sites turn automated readers away. Open the page yourself, copy the ingredients and the method, and paste them under Paste a caption.

Questions

Can Panwich import a whole Pinterest board?
No. It saves one pin at a time, from its link.
Why did it read the recipe from another site?
Because that is where the recipe is. A recipe pin links to the page it was saved from, and that page has the ingredients and the steps.
Do pin.it links work?
Yes. Panwich follows the short link to the pin before reading it.
Is it free?
Yes. Free while Panwich is in its early days.
