How to turn a screenshot into a recipe

Take a screenshot of the caption, or a photo of the cookbook page, and choose it in Panwich. It reads the words in the picture and sorts them into ingredients and steps, as if you had pasted the text.

What you need

  • 1picture with the recipe written in itA screenshot, or a photo taken straight on in good light. The words have to be readable.
  • 1Panwich accountA name, an email and a password. Free while Panwich is in its early days.
  • 1phone or computerPanwich opens in a browser. There is nothing to install.

Method

  1. Get the recipe on screen

Open the caption all the way, so the ingredients and the method are showing, and take the screenshot. For a cookbook, photograph the page flat.

  2. Choose the picture in Panwich

Press +, choose Paste a link, then From a screenshot or photo, and pick the picture.

  3. Check the amounts and save

Reading a picture is less exact than reading text. Panwich opens the recipe in its editor, so look the amounts over before you save.

  4. Cook from it

Change the servings and every amount follows. Add to list puts the ingredients on your shopping list, and Cook step by step shows one step at a time with the timers it found in the method.

What it reads, and what it cannot

Panwich takes

  • A screenshot of a caption, from Instagram, TikTok or anywhere else.
  • A photo of a cookbook page, a magazine page or a recipe card.
  • Printed and on-screen text.

It cannot read

  • More than one picture at a time. A recipe that runs over two screens has to be finished by hand in the editor.
  • A picture of the food. Panwich reads words; it does not recognise a dish.
  • Text too small or too blurred to read.

If it does not work

Panwich says it cannot read pictures right now
The part that reads pictures is sometimes busy. Try again in a minute, or type the recipe in with Write one out.
An amount came out wrong
Correct it in the editor before you save. Amounts are what to check first.

Questions

Why screenshot when I could paste the link?
A screenshot takes one press, and it works for posts Panwich cannot open itself, such as one from a private account you follow.
Does it read handwriting?
It is built for printed and on-screen text. Handwriting has not been tested enough to promise.
Can it tell me the recipe from a photo of a dish?
No. It reads a recipe that is written down. It does not work one out from a picture of the food.
Is it free?
Yes. Free while Panwich is in its early days.
